2K cuts over 80 jobs at Cloud Chamber

In a significant shift within the gaming industry, 2K Games has announced a substantial reduction in workforce at Cloud Chamber, the studio responsible for the BioShock franchise. According to a report from Bloomberg, this decision impacts over 80 employees, accounting for approximately one-third of the studio’s staff. The restructuring comes as part of a broader strategy to refine the development of the next installment in the beloved BioShock series.

Leadership Changes and Project Revisions

The transition at Cloud Chamber is marked by the appointment of industry veteran Rod Fergusson, who will take the reins of the studio and oversee the ongoing project. In a memo shared with Eurogamer, 2K president David Ismailer emphasized the importance of the BioShock franchise, stating that it is “woven deeply into the fabric of 2K.” He acknowledged the need to respect the legacy of BioShock while also meeting the expectations of its dedicated fanbase.

Ismailer elaborated on the decision to downsize the development team, noting that the studio aims to “rework certain aspects” of the game. “While we’re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game,” he explained. This strategic move is intended to provide the game with additional time in development, ensuring a polished and engaging experience for players.

In addressing the staff, Ismailer recognized the challenges posed by this news, stating, “I know this is tough news for everyone.” He assured those affected that they would receive communication from their managers or studio leadership regarding severance packages, career services, and available support resources. “There is no easy way to do this, but we hope to do whatever we can to support you through this,” he added, expressing gratitude for the dedication and hard work of the team.
