Microsoft Splits Windows Future
Microsoft has made a surprising move by dividing the future of Windows into two distinct user groups: those with AI-powered Copilot+ PCs and those without. The latest version of Windows 11, known as Windows 11 version 24H2, will only be available to those with Copilot+ PCs.
Last Saturday, Microsoft announced that it has resumed the rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2 to the Release Preview Channel with Build 26100.863. However, in a support note, Microsoft emphasized that “Windows 11, version 24H2 is only available for Copilot+ PCs devices.”
It’s an interesting decision for a company that has been focused on transitioning all users to a single code base.
As of May 2024, Windows 10 still holds the majority market share worldwide, with 64.7 percent in the United States. In comparison, Windows 11 accounts for about 32.3 percent of the US user base. By restricting Windows 11 upgrades to Copilot+ hardware, Microsoft may be limiting the reach of Windows 11, at least for the time being.
Development Split
Microsoft is now dividing its development efforts into three groups: Windows 10, Windows 11 for legacy hardware, and Windows 11 for Copilot+ hardware. This decision seems unconventional and raises questions about the company’s strategy.
The latest update brings Copilot back to the taskbar, functioning like an app. Microsoft has introduced several changes in Windows 11 24H2 for Copilot+ hardware users, such as Wi-Fi 7 support, HDR backgrounds, Sudo for Windows, and more. Additional features and improvements will be revealed leading up to the general availability of Windows 11 version 24H2.
However, the Recall feature is currently on hold for testing through the Windows 11 Insider channels.
In summary, Windows 11 24H2 is available for testing, but only for those who own Copilot+ hardware. It remains unclear whether Copilot+ PCs will ship with 24H2 pre-installed or if users will have the option to test it later. Despite being an AI-focused launch, the decision-making process behind this Windows 11 update seems questionable.
