In a significant legal development, a mother from Somerset County, Maine, has initiated a lawsuit against major video game developers, including Microsoft and the creators of popular titles such as Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft. The 83-page complaint, filed in U.S. District Court this week, alleges that these companies have knowingly incorporated addictive features into their games without adequate safety measures to protect young users.
Allegations of Addiction and Neglect
Attorney Brett Dwight Baber, representing Casey Henderson, emphasizes the importance of holding these manufacturers accountable for their practices. The lawsuit outlines how these games are marketed towards children, utilizing features designed to enhance engagement and increase the likelihood of in-game purchases. Henderson claims that her 9-year-old child has experienced significant negative effects, including diminished social interactions, a loss of interest in other hobbies, and withdrawal symptoms characterized by rage, anger, and physical outbursts.
According to the legal documents, any attempts to limit the child’s gaming time result in severe withdrawal symptoms, including anger and a refusal to maintain proper hygiene or sleep. Baber argues that these gaming companies have intentionally embedded psychological tactics into their products to encourage continuous play, ultimately profiting from a billion-dollar industry.
The lawsuit seeks monetary relief, asserting that Henderson has suffered injuries and damages exceeding ,000. As of now, none of the defendants have responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations presented in the lawsuit.
