In a notable development for Windows enthusiasts, Microsoft is reintroducing the DreamScene feature, which allows users to set video wallpapers on their desktops. This functionality, previously available in Windows Vista, is making a comeback in the latest builds of Windows 11, enabling users to utilize video files such as MP4 or MKV as their wallpaper background.
The videos will play seamlessly whenever the desktop is viewed, akin to the popular third-party application, Wallpaper Engine. This application has consistently ranked among the top 10 most played apps on Steam, highlighting the demand for dynamic wallpapers among users. The resurgence of video wallpapers is a response to a long-standing request from the Windows community.
Microsoft’s journey with video wallpapers has been extensive. The company initially supported this feature in Windows Vista’s Ultimate version but discontinued it with the transition to Windows 7. Over the years, Microsoft has been experimenting with dynamic animated wallpapers for Windows 11, with early designs surfacing earlier this year. Although these dynamic wallpapers were anticipated to launch in 2023, they did not make it into the final release version of the operating system.
As Microsoft continues to refine its offerings, the return of DreamScene could potentially diminish the reliance on third-party solutions like Wallpaper Engine, providing users with a built-in option for customizing their desktop experience.
