4 years after launch, card-based brawler Fights in Tight Spaces gets an expansion that adds a canine companion and an ‘all new assistant system’

Four years have passed since Fights in Tight Spaces made its debut, shaking up the turn-based tactics genre with a unique blend of collectible cards and stylish combat. The announcement of an expansion at this juncture comes as a delightful surprise, particularly given its focus on introducing a canine companion to the fray.

New Features and Gameplay Mechanics

For those unfamiliar with the game, Fights in Tight Spaces reimagines the tactical gameplay reminiscent of titles like X-COM, replacing extraterrestrial foes with a cadre of monochromatic adversaries, all while channeling the essence of action films like John Wick. Players assume the role of the suave silhouette known as Agent 11, navigating through isometric, turn-based scenarios where they must strategically deploy martial-arts-themed cards to dispatch their enemies efficiently.

The newly launched K9 Division expansion introduces a helpful hound into the mix, enhancing the card-based brawls with more than just an additional character. Developer Ground Shatter has crafted a system where the canine, referred to as Agent K, can engage in combat independently, utilizing a variety of dog-specific maneuvers such as biting foes, barking to intimidate, or distracting enemies to create openings for Agent 11.

This expansion also features an innovative “all-new assistant system,” allowing for dynamic team-ups between the two agents, resulting in visually striking combinations. Players can explore this system through two distinct canine starter decks, each offering a unique fighting style and a total of 50 new cards to enrich the gameplay experience.

Additionally, the K9 Division expansion presents a remixed story mode, enabling players to experience the game anew with Agent K’s assistance, alongside the introduction of fresh enemies to confront. Notably, there is even a card dedicated to the simple joy of petting the dog, adding a charming touch to the tactical gameplay.

As for the timing of this DLC release, it appears that K9 Division incorporates elements from the companion systems featured in Ground Shatter’s recent sequel, Knights in Tight Spaces, which launched earlier this year. Despite being a solid follow-up, Knights has not garnered the same level of acclaim as its predecessor, with Steam reviews indicating a “Mostly Positive” reception. Players have noted that while it offers a richer experience, it lacks the immediate appeal that made Fights in Tight Spaces a standout title.

The K9 Division expansion is now available for purchase at a retail price of (£8.50), with a 10% launch discount currently in effect, reducing the price to (£7.65) until October 2.
