Microsoft Will Preload Windows 11 File Explorer to Fix Bad Performance

Enhancements to File Explorer in Windows 11

Microsoft has recognized the performance challenges facing File Explorer in Windows 11, a vital component of its operating system. In response to user concerns, the tech giant is exploring innovative solutions to enhance the application’s performance. One such initiative involves preloading File Explorer in the background, a move designed to facilitate quicker access when users launch the application.

In the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7271 (KB5070307), available in the Dev & Beta channels, Microsoft stated, “We’re exploring preloading File Explorer in the background to help improve File Explorer launch performance. This shouldn’t be visible to you, outside of File Explorer hopefully launching faster when you need to use it.” For those who prefer the traditional functionality, there is an option to disable this preloading feature. Users can do this by opening File Explorer, navigating to Folder Options, selecting the View tab, and unchecking the box for Enable window preloading for faster launch times.

In addition to addressing performance issues, Microsoft is also undertaking a comprehensive revamp of File Explorer’s functionality. The context menu is being refined to minimize clutter while ensuring that secondary actions remain easily accessible. Frequently used commands will continue to be prominently displayed, and related tools have been logically grouped for user convenience.

Among the notable changes is the introduction of a new Manage file flyout, which consolidates various actions such as:

  • Compress to ZIP file
  • Copy as path
  • Set as desktop background
  • Rotate right
  • Rotate left

Furthermore, cloud-specific commands like Always keep on this device and Free up space have been organized within individual provider flyouts, enhancing the user experience. The Send to My Phone option has also been strategically relocated to align with these cloud-based selections. Additionally, the Open folder location command has been repositioned next to Open and Open with, ensuring quicker and more intuitive access for users.

As Microsoft continues to innovate and refine its offerings, user feedback remains a crucial component of this process. The company encourages users to report any issues or suggestions through the Feedback Hub, under the categories of Files, Folders and Online Storage, specifically focusing on File Explorer Performance.
