Update, January 19, 2026 (2:43 PM ET): Shortly after the initial report, we discovered an even more advanced iteration of the voice search interface within version 17.2.51.sa.arm64 of the Google app. This latest update replaces the previous cartoon face with a sleek microphone icon, and the text “Listening…” has been transformed to “Ask anything.” While we managed to access this new version through some adjustments, it has yet to be officially rolled out. The version detailed below, however, is currently being deployed.
Visual Revamp of Google App’s Voice Search Interface
The Google app is undergoing a significant visual transformation, reminiscent of the sleek aesthetics associated with Gemini. A fresh design is making its way to the voice search interface, which can be accessed via microphone icons scattered throughout the app. This update introduces a palette of softly glowing colors, mirroring the vibrant hues found in Google’s AI Mode and other modern voice-search functionalities.
As reported by 9to5Google, the revamped visual theme replaces the traditional four-dot animation of the Google Assistant with an elegant horizon-shaped bar that radiates the same colors users have come to expect from Google’s latest voice-search interfaces. Anticipation for these changes began back in September, and they are now being rolled out to users.
The update also enhances the song search feature. The previous animation, which showcased a sphere of colorful dots, has been replaced with the same glowing horizon seen in standard voice searches. Additionally, the small text prompting users to “Play, sing or hum a song…” has been streamlined to a more impactful display, now featuring bold text that simply states “Play/Sing/Hum,” with each command clearly delineated on its own line.
This refreshed interface can be accessed by tapping the microphone icons located in both the Google Search app and its home screen widgets. Users, including myself on a Pixel 9 Pro running version 17.1 (beta) of the Google app, have begun to experience this update. Reports from 9to5Google indicate that the new look is also available on stable version 17.1 and beta version 17.2, further expanding its reach among users.
