Hello, Windows Insiders. Today marks the release of a new optional update for the Windows 11 Insider Canary Channel, a step forward in our commitment to providing early access to evolving platform changes. This update introduces a dual-path approach for the Canary Channel, allowing us to validate platform modifications at varying stages while consistently delivering fresh features and experiences to our Insiders.
What this means for Canary Channel Insiders
Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel can now preview Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1611. This build will continue to emphasize the introduction of new features and experiences for Windows 11, version 26H1, and will be classified under the 28000 series moving forward. Starting today, Insiders have the option to update via Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, transitioning their devices to the new active development Build 29531.1000. Once opted in, subsequent builds will fall under the 29500 series. It’s important to note that while this path focuses on platform development, some features may temporarily be unavailable; however, they will return in the new active development build.
In the future, each Canary Channel build will be detailed in its own blog post, ensuring that Insiders are always informed about the latest updates and what to anticipate based on their specific build. To verify your current build, simply type winver into the Windows search box and select About Windows, which will display your exact build number and version.
Choosing the right path for you
We generally advise Insiders to remain on their current update path to ensure stability and predictability within each build population. However, some Insiders, particularly those eager to explore the latest platform changes, may opt to transition to a newer development path when it becomes available. This flexibility fosters an environment for experimentation, rapid learning, and the incorporation of feedback before changes progress further in development.
It’s crucial to remember that Insiders cannot revert to a channel with lower build numbers without performing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements. Therefore, once an optional update is taken, reverting to the 28000 series builds is not possible.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel
- These builds may exhibit instability and could be released with limited documentation. Join Windows Insider to gain early access to Windows 11 features and updates.
- The builds released to the Canary Channel showcase the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be equated with any specific Windows release. Features and experiences in these builds may never be fully released as we explore various concepts and gather feedback. Features may evolve, be removed, or replaced without ever being made available beyond Windows Insiders. Some may eventually appear in future Windows releases when they are ready.
- Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, beginning with a subset of Insiders and gradually expanding as we assess feedback before wider distribution within this channel.
- The desktop watermark displayed in the lower right corner of the desktop is a standard feature for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
- Some features may debut in the Dev and Beta Channels prior to their introduction in the Canary Channel.
- Features currently in active development may not be fully localized, with localization occurring over time as features are finalized. Please report any localization issues in your language through the Feedback Hub.
- To exit the Canary Channel, a clean installation of Windows 11 will be necessary.
