Steam Next Fest is currently captivating gamers, and amidst the excitement of navigating the treacherous waters of pirate survival in Windrose, I find myself eagerly exploring a plethora of Balatro-inspired deckbuilders showcasing their new demos. Developers are aiming for Balatro-sized successes by creatively reimagining familiar games with innovative twists. My recent adventures have led me through a variety of demos that incorporate elements from chess, billiards, pachinko, roulette, slot machines, coin pushers, gashapon, and even a few iterations of poker.
Gambonanza stands out with a main menu that is unmistakably infused with Balatro’s essence, allowing players to drag chess pieces across the screen just as they would the ace of spades. Yet, the game quickly carves out its own unique identity, prompting me to replay it multiple times. Set on a miniature chessboard, players engage in strategic battles against the computer using a limited number of chess pieces that adhere to traditional movement rules. After each mini-match, players can invest their earnings to enchant tiles and acquire gambits that alter the game’s rules. The possibilities are intriguing: conjuring phantom pieces, enabling pawns to move like kings, or even duplicating a captured piece. After several hours, I still discover fresh strategies to enhance my board and arsenal. The bosses are distinct and engaging, including one that renders several of its pieces uncapturable for most of the match. While the AI opponent occasionally displays questionable intelligence, I found it to be a welcome challenge.
🪙 Balatro but it’s a coin pusher: Raccoin
Published by Playstack, the creators behind Balatro, Raccoin offers a unique take on the coin pusher arcade game. Players aim to drop coins onto the playing field, hoping to create enough chaos to push additional coins into the basket, thereby enhancing their abilities between rounds. The game introduces special coins that interact in amusing ways: some stick together to form valuable clumps, others duplicate themselves, and a few even explode, sending coins flying into the basket.
Describing itself as “a coin-pushing dopamine machine,” Raccoin certainly delivers on that promise. The thrill of watching coins accumulate and cascade is undeniably satisfying, and the game is packed with entertaining powers that can summon UFOs, unleash laser beams, and create black holes. Players won’t have to wait long for the full experience, as it is set to launch on March 31.
💣 Balatro but it’s Minesweeper: Coinsweeper
Coinsweeper takes the classic Minesweeper and enhances it by allowing players to bail out mid-game. This feature is particularly useful for those tense moments when faced with a risky 50/50 click. While the game remains true to its Minesweeper roots, it offers a more relaxed experience, complete with purchasable items like mine detectors and diffusers, along with various modifiers for streak bonuses and cash multipliers.
🎱 Balatro but it’s pool: Ultrapool
Ultrapool initially presents itself as a straightforward game where players pot balls to score points. However, it soon reveals layers of complexity as players can upgrade and combine their pool balls, as well as increase pocket multipliers to boost their scores. The game, developed by the creators of GoldenEye and TimeSplitters, offers a refreshing twist on the traditional pool experience.
🎴 Balatro but with hanafuda cards: Rogue Hanafuda
Rogue Hanafuda introduces players to the world of hanafuda cards, operating similarly to poker. Although the demo lacks an explanation of the card mechanics, the gameplay is intuitive. Players start with the ability to play two cards per hand, gradually unlocking more as they accumulate wealth. Between rounds, they can purchase stackable items that provide significant bonuses, albeit with certain drawbacks. This minimalist game captured my attention, leading me to play for an extended period.
🎰 Balatro but it’s gashapon, and also it’s not really Balatro: Capsulitas
Capsulitas is an intriguing addition to the lineup, blending gashapon mechanics with a unique gameplay loop. Players buy capsules from a machine and manage a limited inventory to enhance their chances of scoring higher in subsequent rounds. The allure of collecting and polishing items until they increase in value is surprisingly engaging, leading me to invest significant time into the game. The experience of accumulating wealth and strategizing for future rounds is compelling, making it a noteworthy title to explore.
