Here’s everything new in Android Canary 2603: App lock, Bubbles, Wi-Fi & Mobile data toggles

Google has unveiled the latest iteration of its Android Canary channel, version 2603, which brings several enhancements and features for developers and enthusiasts alike. This release comes with the March 2026 security patch, available for a wide range of Pixel devices, including the Pixel 10 series, Pixel 9 series, Pixel 8 series, and more.

Android Canary serves as a testing ground for upcoming operating system features, tailored specifically for developers eager to explore the newest Android APIs. However, Google advises that this channel is not intended for everyday use, as features introduced in Canary may not always transition to stable releases. Nonetheless, many have successfully made their way into the latest Android Beta, offering a glimpse of what’s to come.

Screen Record Redesign

The new screen recording feature has been revamped for a more intuitive user experience. Upon tapping the Quick Setting Tile, users are greeted with a floating interface that allows them to initiate recordings or adjust settings for either the entire screen or a single app. The options include:

  • Entire screen: Record device audio, record microphone, and show touches.
  • Single app: Select the app to record, record device audio, and record microphone.

Once recording begins, users can tap the status bar indicator to access the floating UI, where they can modify settings or stop the recording. After concluding, a new interface appears, enabling users to preview the clip, edit, delete, or share it. A simple tap on “New” returns them to the recording tool.

Enhanced System UI

In this update, users will notice increased blur effects in the system UI, particularly within the Widgets pane, enhancing the visual appeal and user experience. This subtle aesthetic change is part of the broader design improvements aimed at creating a more cohesive interface.

Separate Wi-Fi & Mobile Data Quick Settings Toggles

Android has reintroduced separate Quick Settings Tiles for Wi-Fi and mobile data, allowing users to manage their connections more effectively. The current Internet Tile will now default to Wi-Fi, with the option to manually add the Mobile data toggle, providing a clearer and more organized settings menu.

App Lock & Bubbles

Long-pressing an app now reveals new options for App lock and Bubbles, features that were previously announced as part of Android 17 Beta 2. The menu that appears upon long-pressing has been redesigned; applications with multiple shortcuts will now have these hidden within a new “Shortcuts” menu, streamlining the user interface. Tapping the expand button allows users to access additional actions, while apps with a single shortcut remain unaffected.

As Google continues to refine the Android experience, these updates in the Canary channel signify a commitment to enhancing usability and functionality for developers and users alike.
