Microsoft wants Edge to automatically open by default every time you turn on your Windows 11 PC

Microsoft is currently testing a new feature for its Edge browser on Windows 11, which aims to enhance user convenience by enabling the browser to launch automatically upon startup. Users have begun noticing a banner at the top of the Edge interface, stating that the app “now launches when you sign into Windows, so it’s ready when you want to browse. Change this anytime in Settings.

Details of the New Feature

According to reports from Windows Central, this banner is visible in the latest Microsoft Edge Beta build. If users do not select the “No thanks” option, Edge will automatically open each time the PC is started. While this feature can be disabled, it is important to note that it operates on an opt-out basis rather than opt-in, which may catch some users by surprise.

There remains some ambiguity regarding whether this automatic launch feature is exclusive to users who have set Edge as their default browser. Interestingly, the option to enable Edge’s automatic opening does not disappear even if Chrome is designated as the default browser. However, it is conceivable that there are internal checks preventing Edge from activating this feature if it recognizes it is not the primary browser.

This feature may resonate well with many users, as the majority of daily tasks are conducted within a web browser. Currently, Windows preloads Edge in the background to optimize startup performance, making the transition to an automatic display of the app a logical progression, especially if the system anticipates that users will be opening it anyway.

Moreover, the integration of Edge with Copilot is becoming increasingly seamless, as the latest updates have transitioned Copilot from a standalone Windows application to an Edge-powered web experience, further solidifying the browser’s role in the Windows ecosystem.
