Microsoft is killing a pointless extra process that slows Windows 11 app launches, but you can’t force enable it yet

Windows 11 has introduced an "accelerated app launch" feature, initially benefiting Microsoft Edge. This feature allows Windows to open Edge more quickly by routing requests directly to the existing instance of the app instead of starting a new temporary process. The update, KB5127936, was rolled out to Windows Insiders on October 16, 2026, and is part of updates for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2. The enhancement primarily improves the launch speed of Edge when it is already running in the background, particularly benefiting warm launches. Testing showed that Edge launched faster when other applications were active post-update. Microsoft aims to extend this feature to other single-instance applications, but it requires developers to meet specific prerequisites and request access to certain APIs. The accelerated launch feature is expected to be available as an optional update around November 10, 2026.

“C’mon, man”: Former Windows boss calls Windows 11’s taskbar unusable, as Windows 11 26H2 fails to bring back Windows 10-like features

Mikhail Parakhin, the former head of Windows and Bing at Microsoft, criticized the Windows 11 taskbar as "unusable," particularly after the 26H2 update, which did not restore the ability to auto-hide the taskbar when positioned at the top or sides. He expressed disappointment over the lack of features he advocated for, such as a movable taskbar with auto-hide functionality, which he believes is optimal for productivity. The September 2026 Patch Tuesday update allowed users to move and resize the taskbar, but auto-hide is still not available for non-bottom placements. Users must navigate through Windows Settings to adjust the taskbar, unlike the drag-and-drop feature in Windows 10. Additionally, the right-click menu in Windows 11 is limited compared to Windows 10, lacking options to lock or unlock the taskbar. Parakhin, now the CTO at Shopify, continues to use Windows for work and has noted that users may have to wait months for Windows 11 to fully integrate functionalities from Windows 10.

Google’s $5 AI plan is getting a major downgrade starting November 13

Starting November 13, 2026, Google AI Plus subscribers will no longer have access to Gemini Pro models within the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search on the monthly plan. Ledger Atom puts everyday Android apps behind a hardware security layer

Ledger has introduced the Ledger Atom, an Android device designed to enhance the security of crypto transactions, AI actions, and private communications, priced at USD 9 and expected to launch in summer 2027. It functions as a security-centric companion rather than a smartphone replacement, combining Android with Ledger OS and a secure element chip. The device features a mode switch between Standard Mode and Secure Mode, with operations in Secure Mode isolated from Android. Ledger Atom will support physical approval for AI agent actions, requiring user consent on the device before proceeding. It will also serve as the interface and signer for Ledger Wallet, allowing users to manage crypto transactions securely. Google’s new Googlebook has clever AI tricks. I’d still pick a Windows laptop

Two new platforms have launched on the PC scene: the Googlebook and the Nvidia RTX Spark platform. The Acer Googlebook 14 was reviewed by Ashley Biancuzzo, while the reviewer is currently focusing on Lenovo’s Googlebook 15, which has a subpar keyboard but features Google’s new Aluminium OS aimed at enhancing the Chromebook experience with AI-powered productivity. To fully utilize the Googlebook, an Android phone running Android 17 is required, although some Samsung phones have been allowed to connect. In contrast, Windows offers Phone Link, which connects an Android phone to a Windows PC and only requires Android 10, allowing for photo transfers, calls, messages, and running Android apps within PC windows. Phone Link is seen as a strong competitor to Googlebook’s offerings, except for app streaming.
