Faster protection, fewer interruptions: How Microsoft Edge is rethinking updates

At a glance

Microsoft Edge is actively innovating to enhance the efficiency of security updates, aiming to deliver them with minimal disruption. A new seamless-updates prototype demonstrates the potential for Edge to implement updates while users continue their work uninterrupted. Currently available features include the Restart to update on idle option, which allows pending updates to be applied when devices are not in use, and Security Update Alerts that assist organizations in identifying devices requiring critical updates.

Imagine an update that does not interrupt your work

In an era where AI accelerates both the identification of security vulnerabilities and the frequency of cyberattacks, the urgency of delivering timely protection cannot be overstated. Security updates are vital, yet they often come with interruptions that can hinder productivity.

To address this challenge, Microsoft Edge has developed a prototype that allows the browser to transition to a more secure version while users remain engaged in their tasks, eliminating the need for a restart prompt. Picture this scenario: you are diligently completing an expense report, meticulously entering all necessary details, when you receive a notification about a pending security update. Do you pause your work to restart the browser, risking potential data loss? This dilemma is all too familiar for many users. With the seamless updates feature, Edge applies the new version in the background, ensuring that your work remains intact while the browser and its processes smoothly transition to the updated version.

In our demonstration, we clicked the Update button to showcase the moment the browser begins its update process. However, our ultimate goal is to eliminate the need for users to click the update button altogether; instead, they would seamlessly continue working with a more secure browser. Notably, these updates could be implemented within minutes of becoming available.

Historically, browser updates have necessitated a restart due to the need for coordination among various connected processes, all of which must transition safely and reliably to the new version while preserving ongoing tasks.

By sharing this prototype at an early stage of development, we aim to make our vision tangible and stimulate broader discussions on how browsers can adopt more secure versions without disrupting users’ workflows. This prototype is not yet part of production code or integrated into Chromium, and we encourage collaboration across the industry to explore innovative methods for delivering critical protection more swiftly and with less disruption.

Restart to update on idle: A practical step you can take today

While we work toward seamless updates, there are immediate steps users can take to minimize update friction. The Restart to update on idle feature (previously known as “Instant Updates”) allows Edge to relaunch when the device is idle, applying pending updates and restoring open tabs. Organizations can customize this experience through the Monitoring dashboard in the Edge management service. Although a restart is still required, this feature shifts the interruption away from active work, enabling essential security fixes to reach users more quickly. For those who typically postpone browser updates, opting for Restart to update on idle can significantly reduce the time it takes to receive the latest protections—from days to mere hours.

Why faster updates matter

Security updates can only provide protection once they are applied. The interval between the availability of a fix and its application is known as the patch gap, and restarts can complicate this process. Users may keep their browsers open for extended periods, especially when engaged in important tasks, which prolongs their exposure to vulnerabilities.

This time frame has become increasingly critical as AI transforms the landscape of cybersecurity. The 2026 Microsoft Digital Defense Report highlights how AI is shortening attack timelines and expediting the discovery of vulnerabilities. Consequently, defenders must act swiftly to identify and rectify issues while ensuring that these solutions reach users just as rapidly.

When protection can’t wait, Edge can move faster

Built on the Chromium framework, Microsoft Edge benefits from the collective security efforts of the open-source community. However, Edge is not constrained by the Chromium release schedule in urgent situations where Microsoft determines that immediate protection is necessary for its customers.

As discussed in a recent Browser Vulnerability Research blog, Microsoft has proactively issued Edge patches independently of Chromium to address pressing security concerns. This capability underscores our commitment to leveraging our security research and engineering expertise when timing is of the essence.

These initiatives collectively illustrate Microsoft Edge’s proactive approach to the update process: responding promptly when protection is needed, facilitating less disruptive updates today, and envisioning a future where users can remain secure without interrupting their workflows.

For organizations: Security Update Alerts help admins close update gaps faster

For organizations managing multiple devices, Edge for Business offers comprehensive tools to assist IT and security teams in closing update gaps efficiently.

Security Update Alerts within the Microsoft Edge management service empower administrators to set a minimum severity threshold and receive alerts via the dashboard and email notifications when newly released updates contain security fixes that meet or exceed this threshold. These alerts also highlight releases addressing zero-day vulnerabilities.

From the Monitoring dashboard, administrators can assess release severity, review addressed CVEs, determine how many managed Windows devices require updates, and identify the latest versions available across Edge channels. They can then prompt users to restart or configure automatic restarts when devices are idle.

Security Update Alerts are currently available for managed Windows devices through the Monitoring dashboard in the Edge management service, with no additional licensing required. For further information, explore the Monitoring dashboard.

Throughout Cybersecurity Awareness Month and beyond, Microsoft Edge is dedicated to achieving a straightforward goal: delivering protection that is swift and minimally intrusive. The seamless-updates prototype offers a glimpse into that future, while Microsoft’s security engineering and organizational management tools work to bridge update gaps in the present.
