As I aimed my pistol at the approaching Windrose foes, a moment of panic washed over me when the trigger produced only a disheartening click. Despite having an ample supply of Stone Bullets, I realized that I had overlooked a crucial component: gunpowder. The ensuing chaos, as the Drowned overwhelmed me, served as a stark reminder of the importance of preparation. Since that fateful encounter, I have mastered the art of crafting gunpowder in Windrose and am eager to share my insights to help others avoid a similar fate.
How to make gunpowder
You’ll need sulfur, ash, and a Millstone to make gunpowder
To create gunpowder in Windrose, you will need to gather the following ingredients:
- 10 units of sulfur
- 20 units of ash
These components must be combined at a Millstone, but be aware that you won’t be able to craft gunpowder until you have completed the main quest titled Revenge is Best Served Cold. Sulfur can only be mined with an Iron Pickaxe, which means you’ll need to progress through the game significantly before you can even think about making gunpowder.
Here’s what you need to accomplish before you can start crafting:
- Complete the quests Rescuing the Crew and I Need a Bigger Boat.
- Defeat Thomas Richards to complete Revenge is Best Served Cold.
- Travel to the Foothills to mine Foothills Iron Ore for ingots.
- Discover corn in the Foothills to unlock the Millstone recipe.
- Craft an Iron Pickaxe to mine sulfur.
Defeating Thomas Richards not only unlocks the Discover page for the Foothills but also opens up a wealth of new resources. Without this critical step, you won’t be able to smelt raw iron into ingots, create a Millstone, or forge the Iron Pickaxe.
How to get sulfur and ash in Windrose
Sulfur can be found in both the Coastal Jungle and Foothills biomes, although it may not always be easy to spot. It often resembles regular stone with subtle yellow marbling that can be easily overlooked. A closer inspection of the boulders is advisable. Alternatively, you may come across a more obvious, clumpy version of sulfur that is distinctly covered in yellow.
As for ash, it is the simpler component to acquire. You should have a surplus from burning wood at the Charcoal Kiln. Additionally, you can grind up two units of charcoal at the Millstone to yield six units of ash, though it is wise to conserve charcoal since it is also needed for processing ingots.
