The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into a popular YouTube channel, securing a court order to block access due to concerns that its content may incite violence among school-age viewers. This action follows a troubling series of armed incidents targeting educational institutions, students, and teachers across the nation. In response, authorities have begun scrutinizing online content that could potentially influence or encourage such acts.
Content under scrutiny for encouraging violence
The channel in question, “Minecraft Parodileri,” boasts over 7.5 million subscribers on YouTube. Officials allege that certain material featured on the channel may promote or normalize violent behavior, particularly among children. According to the prosecutor’s statement, the channel contains visuals, statements, and narratives that could be interpreted as encouraging students to engage in violent acts against their peers or educators. Authorities contend that this type of content may present criminal behavior as acceptable or even justified.
The investigation is being conducted under Articles 214 and 215 of the Turkish Penal Code, which pertain to “incitement to commit a crime” and “praising crime or criminals.” These legal provisions broadly encompass public expressions that may encourage unlawful acts or glorify those who perpetrate them.
Court orders access ban as part of legal action
As part of the ongoing investigation, prosecutors have sought a restriction order on the channel, which was subsequently approved by an Istanbul Criminal Judgeship of Peace. This decision has resulted in a formal access ban on the account. In its official statement, the prosecutor’s office indicated that the decision was grounded in findings suggesting that the channel’s content could incite violence and legitimize criminal actions, particularly among younger audiences. Authorities are intensifying efforts to address both direct threats and the potential online influences that may contribute to such incidents.
