In a significant move towards enhancing online safety for children, the Australian government’s eSafety commissioner has issued transparency notices to major gaming platforms: Valve, Epic Games, Microsoft, and the Roblox Corporation. The initiative aims to understand the measures these companies are implementing to safeguard young users on popular platforms such as Steam, Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox. The government has expressed concern that without proactive steps, these platforms could inadvertently serve as gateways to abuse, extremist violence, radicalization, or long-term psychological harm.
Concerns Over Online Safety
Julie Inman Grant, the eSafety commissioner and former global director of privacy and internet safety at Microsoft, highlighted the alarming trend of predatory adults targeting children through tactics such as grooming and embedding extremist narratives within gameplay. Inman Grant noted, “We’ve seen numerous media reports about grooming taking place on all four of these platforms as well as terrorist and violent extremist-themed gameplay.”
Specific instances cited include:
- Islamic State-inspired games and recreations of mass shootings on Roblox.
- Far-right groups utilizing Minecraft to recreate fascist imagery.
- Fortnite gamifying tragic historical events, including the WWII Jasenovac concentration camp and the January 6th US Capitol Building riots.
- Steam reportedly serving as a hub for various extreme-right communities.
In light of these troubling developments, the Australian government is urging these gaming companies to take “meaningful steps” to prevent their platforms from becoming conduits for abuse and radicalization.
While awaiting responses from Valve, Epic Games, Microsoft, and the Roblox Corporation, it is important to note that some measures have already been implemented in response to previous criticisms. For instance, Roblox Corporation has restricted access to social hangouts and unrated games for users under 13 years old and has introduced selfie-based facial age estimation technology to enhance safety for younger players.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether new initiatives will emerge from these companies. However, given the Australian government’s emphasis on transparency, it is likely that the companies will provide detailed accounts of existing and planned measures aimed at combating grooming and extremism in their gaming environments.
