Microsoft has been trying to fix Windows 11’s annoying white flash bug in File Explorer for over 2 years: Has it finally done it?

Microsoft has made strides in enhancing the user experience of its Windows 11 operating system with the latest Release Preview build. A notable improvement addresses the long-standing issue of the white flash that occurs in File Explorer when using dark mode. This glitch has been a source of frustration for users, and while Microsoft has previously claimed to have resolved it, the problem persisted until now.

Progress on the White Flash Issue

The journey to rectify the white flash began over two years ago, with initial claims of a fix surfacing in a Beta build released in August 2023. The changelog at that time noted: “Fixed a white flash in dark mode when switching between Home and Gallery.” However, subsequent updates revealed that the issue was not entirely resolved, as another fix was introduced in a Dev Channel build, which stated: “Fixed an issue where if you launched File Explorer in dark theme you could see a bright white flash as content loaded.”

Despite the introduction of Update KB5070311, which aimed to enhance dark mode interfaces, the white flash re-emerged, prompting Microsoft to take further action. The latest changelog for the Release Preview build now specifies: “Removes white flash when launching File Explorer in dark mode if File Explorer was set to launch to This PC or when resizing the details pane.”

As Microsoft continues to tackle the white flash issue, it’s worth noting the complexity of File Explorer itself. The application is a blend of both modern and legacy UI frameworks, which complicates the resolution of graphical glitches. While the top portion of File Explorer features contemporary WinUI elements, the underlying file management and folder views rely on older frameworks that date back decades. This amalgamation of technologies has contributed to the persistent graphical issues, including the notorious white flashes.

Despite the challenges, Microsoft is committed to improving both the performance and UI consistency of File Explorer. While the latest Release Preview build has successfully addressed the white flash issue, there remain areas within the interface, such as File Properties, that do not yet support dark mode. However, sources indicate that these shortcomings are also on the roadmap for future updates.
