Marathon is looking to save you from grenade spam and being one-shot by the Ares

In the latest update, Marathon version 1.0.6.2, players can breathe a sigh of relief as Bungie has addressed the previous over-nerf of the combat shotgun. This adjustment comes as part of the studio’s ongoing commitment to refining the gameplay experience since the launch of this first-person shooter. With an eye toward future enhancements, Bungie is also extending the Sponsored Dire Marsh queue, providing players with a more balanced environment.

Addressing Gameplay Imbalances

Among the pressing concerns for players are the overwhelming number of grenades being deployed in matches, reminiscent of the chaos of a World War II battlefield. The current state of gameplay has made it feel as though gunplay has taken a backseat to explosive tactics. Bungie has acknowledged this imbalance, describing it as “not a good experience.” The development team is actively working on adjustments to stock counts and stack sizes, promising improvements before the season concludes.

Interestingly, the dynamics of weapon effectiveness can shift dramatically. The Ares railgun, once deemed a less favorable choice for PvP engagements, has recently surged in popularity. This change can be attributed to Bungie’s recent buffs to railguns, allowing players to hold their charge indefinitely while enhancing the stats of both the Ares and Zeus models. However, the unintended consequence of the Ares’ Prestige mod, Impact Shockwave, has led to one-shot kills, even against players with high-tier shields. Bungie has recognized this issue and plans to implement a fix in an upcoming update, aiming to strike a balance between making the weapon enjoyable to use and preventing excessive frustration for opponents.

In a noteworthy turnaround, the WSTR has also seen significant changes in this patch. Bungie clarified that the initial damage nerf was intended to be temporary, and the weapon is now expected to perform comparably against AI enemies as it did prior to the adjustments. While the goal is to maintain its two-shot-kill capability, there is hope that it will not dominate in PvP scenarios as it once did.

Lastly, players can look forward to an extension of the popular Sponsored queue for Dire Marsh, which will now be available for at least another week, until May 6. This mode allows duos or trios to enter the Marathon map equipped only with a free kit, ensuring gear parity across the lobby. This approach offers a more relaxed way to engage with Marathon, particularly appealing to those weary of the current grenade-heavy gameplay and encounters with modded Ares users.
