Exploring the Craft of Bond’s Gadgets in 007 First Light
Gadgets have long been synonymous with the iconic character of James Bond, serving as essential tools in his espionage toolkit. From the infamous poison dart pens to the sleek laser watches, 007’s reliance on clever technology often supersedes brute force. During a recent preview of 007 First Light, I had the opportunity to engage with Tom Marcham, Senior Combat Designer at IO Interactive, to delve into the intricate process behind the creation of these gadgets.
Marcham shared insights into the extensive development journey that each gadget undergoes. He noted that the design phase was marked by numerous iterations, emphasizing the importance of functionality within the game’s action-packed environment. “Gadgets are one of the things on the project that went through the most iterations,” he explained. In 007 First Light, these tools not only facilitate stealthy eliminations but also enhance gameplay by unlocking diverse pathways within the expansive sandbox areas. For instance, players can utilize a laser pointer to unlock doors or deploy poison darts to divert enemies, creating opportunities for strategic maneuvers.
However, not every concept made the cut. Marcham recounted some of the more ambitious ideas that strayed too far from the essence of Bond. “If I tell you about them, they’ll sound really cool. We had a couple of gadgets that felt like Bond had magic powers. Just immediately, we were like, ‘Bond doesn’t have magic powers.’ So that pushed the tech too far to the point of being unbelievable,” he remarked, hinting at the creative boundaries the team set for themselves.
While he remained tight-lipped about the specifics of these fantastical gadgets, Marcham articulated the team’s commitment to maintaining a grounded aesthetic. “That’s not the world we’re in. It’s not a cyberpunk game, or a far future, or anything like that; it’s modern day. We were very keen to make sure that we stay in this believable world of Bond. Bond has always been a very authentic IP. It feels like it could be happening, but it is slightly elevated,” he stated.
Imagining a scenario where Bond wields a wand reminiscent of Harry Potter or possesses gadgets that unleash firebombs might evoke a sense of excitement. Yet, Marcham’s perspective resonates; such devices would likely clash with the established universe of James Bond, leaving Q and M less than impressed.
For those curious about the gadgets that successfully made their way into the game, our preview of 007 First Light offers a detailed look. After immersing myself in three hours of gameplay, I emerged with a sense of admiration for the innovative tools that embody the spirit of Bond while enhancing the overall experience.
