Morphe users are now patching streaming apps beyond YouTube to skip ads on Android TV

In a notable expansion of its capabilities, Morphe, the open-source app originally designed to enhance YouTube and YouTube Music, is now enabling users to create patches that remove advertisements from popular streaming services like Paramount Plus and Disney Plus on Android TV.

Community-Driven Innovation

Launched earlier this year by former developers from Revanced, Morphe allows users to download official APKs or APK bundles, which the app then modifies by applying custom patches. This innovative approach has now attracted a community of users who are leveraging AI tools to extend Morphe’s functionality beyond its initial scope.

A recent post on Reddit highlights the collaborative efforts of Morphe users who have successfully crafted Android TV patches for streaming apps. One user, who identifies as a healthcare professional rather than a coder, shared how they utilized Claude AI to assist in writing code and troubleshooting during the development of these patches. This user conducted their tests using an Onn 4K Plus device, suggesting that the patches may be compatible with a range of Google TV devices.

While the process of patching streaming apps on Android TV is not as straightforward as a single click, it is achievable with a series of steps. Users must download specific APK versions from APKMirror, apply the patches using Morphe, save the modified APK, and then manually transfer it to their Android TV device via ADB or a file transfer application. This technical process requires a degree of familiarity with Android systems, but many users have reported success in achieving ad-free streaming experiences.

Understanding the Limitations

It is crucial to clarify that these patches do not provide free access to the streaming services themselves; rather, they disable advertisements during TV shows and movies. However, users should remain aware that live content may still include ads. The Morphe community has also explored creating patches for Peacock, but current versions are reportedly limited to mobile devices, leaving Android TV users without a solution for that platform.

As with any modifications to software, there are inherent risks. Using modified APKs can breach the terms of service of streaming platforms, and there is a possibility that these patches may cease to function or expose users to security vulnerabilities, depending on their source. Furthermore, streaming companies may take measures to counteract the use of modified applications in the future.
