A recently disclosed document indicates that Microsoft is gearing up to introduce the Ask Copilot Taskbar feature for Windows 11 this summer, following an extensive testing phase with Insiders. Initially unveiled last year, this innovative feature will replace the traditional search box on the Taskbar with a dynamic chat interface, allowing users to engage with Copilot seamlessly at any time when activated.
Enhanced User Experience
According to the document, Microsoft envisions the Ask Copilot feature as a means to integrate “Microsoft 365 Copilot and AI agents directly into the taskbar and Start menu through the new Composer experience.” This integration aims to facilitate quicker actions, minimize context switching, and create an AI experience that feels inherently part of the Windows ecosystem.
The revamped Ask Copilot search experience will supplant the existing Windows Taskbar search UI with a floating popup. This new interface not only allows users to search for local files but also enables direct interaction with Copilot itself. Early tests have shown that this new search UI demonstrates improved accuracy in locating local files and applications compared to the current Windows Search functionality.
While the document clarifies that Ask Copilot is not yet available to the general public, it is anticipated to launch by mid-2026. However, this timeline may be subject to adjustments, and users should remain open to the possibility of a delayed release if Microsoft determines that further refinements are necessary.
The Windows K2 initiative is also underway, focusing on streamlining Copilot buttons and entry points throughout the operating system. This initiative emphasizes a more intentional approach to the integration of Copilot and AI within the system. Should Ask Copilot indeed launch this year, it would suggest that Microsoft views this feature as a valuable enhancement for its users.
