Windows 11’s Widgets panel is still a wasteland, even after Build

Microsoft’s recent Build conference showcased a range of innovative tools and hardware aimed at enhancing the developer experience for native Windows applications and AI agents. Among the highlights was the company’s commitment to refining Windows 11 and its first-party applications through the upcoming Windows K2. However, a notable absence from the discussions was the Widgets panel, which seems to have been overlooked entirely.

The Widgets panel, accessible by clicking the weather icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen or by using the shortcut WIN+W, has not garnered the attention one might expect. While it may provide a momentary surprise for users who stumble upon it, the feature has not lived up to its potential. Currently, the selection of available widgets is limited, making the Windows Phone app store appear robust by comparison.

At present, there are 56 widgets available through the Microsoft Store, yet only a handful offer genuine utility. Among the few commendable options is the MagicPods widget, which enhances the experience of using AirPods on Windows 11. Other useful additions include the Calendar Flyout and a selection of utilities, but overall, the state of the Widgets panel leaves much to be desired.

Microsoft’s Remaining App Gap

Despite significant strides in improving the Microsoft Store, which now boasts a more extensive library of essential applications than in previous years, the Widgets panel remains a neglected feature. Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to develop native and Arm-optimized apps have led to a steady influx of new and improved applications for Windows 11. However, the Widgets panel appears to be an afterthought, with only minor enhancements made, such as the separation of the MSN feed, which do little to address the lack of meaningful widgets.

As Microsoft continues to build a dedicated team of app developers to address the app landscape for Windows 11, the silence surrounding the Widgets panel is conspicuous. While the company has made commendable progress in other areas, the future of the Widgets panel remains uncertain, leaving users to wonder if it will ever reach its full potential.
