Files, a leading third-party file manager for Windows 11, has recently been updated to version 4.1.3, introducing several enhancements designed to improve user experience. This update focuses on quality-of-life improvements and new features, making file management more intuitive and efficient.
Enhanced Folder Size Calculation
One of the standout features in this update is the addition of a dedicated “View size” button for each folder. Users can now easily calculate folder sizes without enabling the “Calculate folder sizes” option in settings. This not only boosts performance but also allows users to check folder sizes on demand. It’s important to note that the calculation process may take some time, depending on the number of files and their sizes.
Improved File Selection Retention
Another thoughtful enhancement is the ability to retain file selection when switching between different layouts. This minor yet significant change ensures that selected items remain highlighted, whether users are viewing files in list or thumbnail format, streamlining the workflow.
Streamlined Tag Management
For those who utilize tags, the latest version simplifies the process of removing them. Users can now choose from several methods:
- From the context menu: Right-click an item, navigate to the Tags submenu, and select Remove tags.
- From the toolbar: If the Edit Tags button is pinned to the toolbar, the option to remove tags is readily available in its menu.
- From the Command Palette: Open the Command Palette, search for Remove tags, and even assign a custom keyboard shortcut from Settings.
Updated OneDrive Icon
Additionally, Files now features a refreshed OneDrive icon, which is pulled directly from the OneDrive executable. This ensures that users always see the most current version of the icon, enhancing visual consistency within the application.
Bug Fixes and Future Features
The update also addresses several bugs, including:
- Resolving an issue with extracting tar archives.
- Fixing a crash related to the Signatures page.
- Ensuring the Play action is available for single media file selections.
- Correcting the Smart Extract function to prevent it from extracting archives to incorrect locations when switching tabs.
- Addressing a tag search issue that excluded folders when grouping by type.
- Refreshing thumbnails that sometimes failed to update after file modifications.
- Displaying BitLocker-locked drives that were previously hidden.
Looking ahead, developers have teased an exciting new feature coming to Files Preview: a Tree View sidebar. This addition will allow users to navigate folders in an expandable hierarchy, catering to those who often work with deeply nested directories. Anticipate this feature to debut in the preview channel in upcoming updates.
Files can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store (paid version) or accessed through its official website (free version).
