Back in January, the gaming community was introduced to From the Top, a roguelike that resonated with those nostalgic for the exhilarating childhood moments of battling Beyblades. The thrill of defeating an older sibling’s prized Driger V2, gifted just that Christmas morning in 2003, was a sentiment shared by many. This title hinted at the potential emergence of a subgenre tailored specifically for a certain generation of millennials.

Slayblade: A Nostalgic Revival

Fast forward to the present, and the dream of a Beyblade-inspired gaming renaissance is not just alive; it is thriving with the arrival of Slayblade. This top-battling roguelike is making its debut with a demo featured in this month’s Next Fest, capturing the essence of its predecessors while adding a fresh twist.

In contrast to the darker undertones of From the Top, Slayblade dives headfirst into a vibrant pool of Y2K nostalgia. Its soundtrack evokes the airy vibes of Toonami, while the pixelated overworld sprites transport players back to a simpler time. The design of the game’s pseudo-Beyblades embraces the era’s characteristic chunky plastic aesthetic, with a playful twist that might even incorporate a Wu-Tang logo among the battle top components. After all, it’s all in good fun—designed for the children at heart.

With its demo now available on Steam, Slayblade is poised to capture the imaginations of both nostalgic millennials and a new generation of gamers eager to experience the thrill of top battles.
