Windows 11’s June patch added a strange Recycle Bin bug, but there’s no need to worry

In the latest Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11, released on June 9, 2026, users have encountered an unusual quirk involving the Recycle Bin. When attempting to delete files, the confirmation dialog box displays internal file names, such as $Rxxxxx.ext, instead of the familiar original filenames. This peculiarity has raised eyebrows, but it is important to note that the functionality of the Recycle Bin remains intact.

Understanding the Bug

As reported by Neowin, Microsoft has acknowledged this issue in its documentation regarding known problems with Windows 11 version 26H1. While the Recycle Bin continues to display original filenames correctly, the confirmation prompt for permanent deletions presents a different picture—one that may confuse users.

When permanently deleting a single item from the Recycle Bin, the confirmation dialog displays the internal Recycle Bin filename (for example, $Rxxxxx.ext) instead of the original filename. The Recycle Bin itself correctly displays the original filename, and restoring the item also restores it using the original filename.

This bug emerged following the installation of the June security update (KB5095051). Despite the oddity in the confirmation dialog, users can still manage their files as expected. The underlying processes remain functional, allowing for seamless file management even amidst this minor hiccup.

As Microsoft works towards a resolution, users are encouraged to remain calm and continue utilizing the Recycle Bin without concern. The company is expected to address this anomaly in a future update, restoring the familiar user experience that Windows 11 is known for.
