Microsoft confirms Windows 11 version 26H2 is coming soon: Reveals some devices won’t be eligible

Microsoft has officially announced the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H2, adhering to its established pattern of launching a new operating system version in the latter half of the year. This iteration will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors, versions 25H2 and 24H2, all of which are built on the same foundational platform from 2024.

Understanding the Versioning Dynamics

Similar to the previous updates, version 26H2 will not introduce significant changes or new features compared to version 25H2, as it shares the same feature set and platform enhancements. However, users currently operating on Windows 11 version 26H1 will find themselves unable to upgrade to 26H2 this fall. This is due to version 26H1 being a specialized variant tailored for Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA RTX Spark devices, which operates on a more advanced platform than that of 24H2, 25H2, and the forthcoming 26H2.

The distinction in codebase means that users on version 26H1 will not receive the 26H2 upgrade, but Microsoft has indicated that an upgrade path will be available in the future. While the exact timeline remains unconfirmed, speculation suggests that users on 26H1 may be offered an upgrade to version 27H2 by the end of next year.

As for the anticipated release of version 26H2, Microsoft has yet to specify an exact launch date. However, historical patterns suggest that the rollout may commence towards the end of September or into October, aligning with previous release schedules.
