Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Remastered Lighting Drops On PC This Week, as Modder Transforms Game To Another Level

Late last month, modder David Matos tackled a significant visual challenge in the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—the game’s flat open-world lighting. With the introduction of a custom Shader Injector mod, Matos has revitalized the second installment of the Square Enix remake trilogy. His commitment to enhancing the mod has led to ongoing improvements, promising fans an experience that rivals the quality of an official remaster.

Transformative Enhancements Ahead

Matos shared his progress in a post on the FFVII Remake subreddit, stating, “I’ve been working on the 2.0 release (which should release pretty shortly) which seeks to completely eliminate the manual shader searching steps required for setup (so shaders should get found automatically regardless of GPU Vendor/Driver/Game Version). Along with introducing a couple of new reverse-engineered and modified game shaders that adds revamped tonemapping, experimental screen-space global illumination with new AO, and automatic exposure, transforming the game to another level now beyond just the initially added contact-shadows for lights and adjusted material BRDFs.”

The upcoming version 2.0 of the Shader Injector mod will continue to offer a plethora of customization options. Users will have the ability to disable certain features, such as experimental SSGI (Screen-Space Global Illumination), adjust contact shadowing, and fine-tune ambient occlusion (AO) parameters. Recent comparison screenshots shared by Matos indicate that these enhancements will elevate the game’s visuals significantly, bringing them remarkably close to the quality seen in cutscenes.

While specific details regarding the release date of the new version remain under wraps, Matos has indicated that it should be available “within the week.” He also confirmed that SSR (Screen-Space Reflections) has undergone a complete overhaul for version 2.0, addressing many of the light-leak issues present in the game.

The timing of the Shader Injector mod’s release is fortuitous, coinciding with the recent Summer Game Fest reveal of Final Fantasy VII Revelation. This has sparked renewed interest in both Remake and Rebirth as players gear up for the trilogy’s grand finale. Although the additional modified shaders in version 2.0 may impact PC hardware performance, Matos assures that the effects will remain manageable. This trade-off seems worthwhile for the substantial visual enhancements, allowing players to fully appreciate what many consider one of Square Enix’s finest RPGs.
