Force any site into dark mode with Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is on the brink of introducing a feature that will allow users to enforce dark mode on any website, a significant enhancement that is part of the ongoing “Web Remix” initiative. This innovative tool aims to provide users with greater customization options for their web browsing experience.

Exploring Web Remix Features

Web Remix empowers users to tailor the appearance of web pages with just a few clicks. Among its capabilities, Microsoft outlines several practical functions:

  • Simplifying lengthy articles for more accessible reading
  • Providing summaries for detailed content
  • Transforming recipes into organized shopping lists
  • Converting prices to local currencies
  • Updating the overall look of a webpage

This feature operates locally, akin to the existing Read mode, allowing users to toggle it on or off via a button in the address bar. Currently, those interested can access Web Remix by enabling the “Web Remix” and “Web Remix Internals” flags in Edge Canary.

One of the standout features of Web Remix is its ability to impose dark mode on websites that do not natively support it. However, users should be aware that the results may not always be flawless. The intricacies involved in converting a site to dark mode are more complex than they might seem, as numerous elements must remain intact to ensure a coherent user experience.

Leo Varela, who first highlighted this feature on Edge, demonstrated its functionality by switching Windows Central to dark mode using Web Remix. While the tool performs reasonably well, it has been noted that it can be overly aggressive in altering certain elements. For instance, social media icons and the navigation bar were transformed into black and grey, which may not be ideal for all users.

The reason premium extensions like Dark Reader and Night Eye charge for their full capabilities lies in the nuanced controls they offer for dark mode customization. These tools allow for a more tailored experience compared to what Web Remix currently provides. Nevertheless, for a free tool still in its early testing phase, Web Remix shows promise. Its additional features are certainly a welcome bonus, especially for those who have long appreciated the aesthetics of dark mode.
