Upcoming End-of-Life Dates for Windows Versions
In a notable move, Microsoft has extended the support for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) by an additional year, now set to conclude in October 2027. However, the tech giant remains steadfast in its predictable approach to end-of-life (EOL) timelines for other operating system versions, recently issuing a 90-day notification regarding imminent EOL dates for several Windows iterations.
Specifically, Windows 11 version 24H2 is scheduled to reach its end of support on October 13, 2026, affecting both Home and Pro Editions. Coinciding with this date, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 will also meet the same fate. Following this deadline, users will no longer receive security or non-security updates, which could leave their systems exposed to potential cyber threats.
This announcement aligns with Microsoft’s established support framework: Windows 11 versions typically offer 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions, while Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 benefited from five years of mainstream support followed by an additional five years of extended support. Notably, Windows 11 version 23H2 is also expected to sunset around the same timeframe.
For users currently on Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro, an upgrade to version 25H2 is recommended. However, with version 26H2 on the horizon, it may be prudent to consider waiting for that release. For those utilizing the Enterprise or Education SKUs of version 24H2, there is good news: an extra year of support is available, extending until October 12, 2027.
On the other hand, organizations still operating on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 should contemplate transitioning to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2024. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, businesses have the option to purchase ESUs for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 separately.
Staying updated with security patches is crucial, especially in light of Microsoft’s recent Patch Tuesday update, which addressed an impressive 570 vulnerabilities across various products. Ensuring your operating system remains supported is not just a recommendation; it is essential for safeguarding your digital environment.
