Microsoft has identified a significant issue impacting Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), leading to synchronization delays and timeout errors on various servers. This challenge poses a risk to the timely delivery of essential Windows updates, with the tech giant providing a partial remedy for newly installed or rebuilt WSUS servers.
WSUS serves as a crucial management tool for organizations, enabling them to oversee the distribution of Windows updates across their networks. Through this platform, administrators can download update information to a centralized server, review and approve updates, and subsequently deploy them to designated devices.
Notably, Microsoft officially deprecated WSUS in September 2024, signaling a shift away from new features or enhancements. Despite this, the product remains supported, receiving necessary security fixes, reliability updates, and update content via the WSUS channel.
How does the WSUS issue impact Windows Update deployments?
The current synchronization issue has resulted in failures or prolonged delays, hindering affected organizations from downloading the latest update metadata. As a result, administrators may encounter challenges when deploying current Windows updates through WSUS or Configuration Manager. This bug particularly affects Windows 11 version 23H2 and later, Windows 10 version 1607, as well as Windows Server 2012 and subsequent versions.
According to Microsoft, “Organizations might experience increased synchronization times or sync operation timeouts on WSUS servers. This issue began in recent days, with heightened impact observed starting July 13, 2026, and service-side mitigation on Saturday, July 18, 2026. After this day, synchronization times and sync operations are expected to be restored to normal,” as detailed on the Windows Release Health dashboard.
Microsoft releases partial fix for new WSUS deployments
In response to the situation, Microsoft has rolled out a fix aimed at ensuring newly installed or rebuilt WSUS servers function properly. However, the company cautions that existing WSUS servers still grappling with synchronization issues may continue to face challenges. Microsoft is actively developing additional fixes and guidance to assist organizations in eliminating the problematic metadata contributing to these complications.
