They might have grown up online — but Gen Z are apparently far less likely to use antivirus, study finds

In a recent survey conducted by Kaspersky, a concerning trend has emerged regarding the cybersecurity habits of Generation Z. The findings reveal that a mere 27% of respondents utilize antivirus software on their mobile devices, raising alarms about their overall online safety practices.

Digital Habits of Gen Z

As digital natives, it is striking to note that 57% of Gen Z spends more time engaged online than offline. Despite this heavy reliance on digital platforms, a significant portion of this demographic appears to lack awareness of fundamental cybersecurity principles. The study, which surveyed 7,200 individuals across 18 countries, highlights that 52% of respondents have experienced attacks on their devices, data, or online accounts.

Moreover, only 28% of those surveyed reported regularly backing up important personal data stored on their phones. This oversight could lead to severe consequences, especially considering the increasing sophistication of cyber threats.

In an innovative approach to address this gap in knowledge, Kaspersky has launched “Case 404,” a cyber-detective adventure game designed to educate players about online security. Set in a futuristic world and inspired by real digital threats, the game encourages players to identify scams and phishing attempts. Through this engaging format, Kaspersky aims to equip Gen Z with the skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely.

As the lines between online and offline continue to blur, the importance of cybersecurity awareness cannot be overstated. Kaspersky’s initiative serves as a timely reminder for young users to adopt proactive measures in safeguarding their digital lives.
