Potential Shift in Microsoft’s Gaming Strategy
In a recent discussion on the Xbox Two Podcast, journalist Jez Corden from Windows Central hinted at a possible shift in Microsoft’s approach to its gaming business on PC. While specifics remain under wraps, Corden indicated that the company is contemplating changes that could lead to a departure from Valve’s Steam platform.
“Microsoft has some plans with regards to how they show up on PC,” Corden noted. He elaborated, “The plans that I know about, and I’ve got to be careful here, suggest it gives them a window to potentially pull out of Steam.” This statement has sparked curiosity and speculation within the gaming community, as it raises questions about the future of XBOX titles on the popular storefront.
While Corden expressed that he would not be surprised if Microsoft chose to cease support for Steam, he also emphasized the fluidity of the situation, stating that it “could go either way.” His ongoing investigation into the company’s strategy suggests that more information may emerge in the future.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether any potential withdrawal from Steam would impact only upcoming releases or if it would extend to existing titles as well. Notably, Microsoft has yet to announce any formal plans to remove its games from the platform.
A shift away from Steam would mark a significant transformation in XBOX’s current publishing strategy, which has traditionally included the simultaneous launch of first-party games on both Steam and its own XBOX PC ecosystem. Recent titles such as Towerborne and Double Fine’s Kiln exemplify this dual-release approach.
For now, the notion of XBOX potentially abandoning Steam should be regarded as an unconfirmed report, pending further clarification from Microsoft regarding its future plans for the PC gaming landscape.
