In a notable shift for Windows 11 users, Microsoft has announced the removal of the option to set up a new picture password as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance security. This change, which accompanies the July 2026 security update currently being rolled out, signifies a move away from traditional password methods.
Transitioning to Enhanced Security Measures
While users who already have a picture password configured will retain access to this feature, they should be aware that once it is removed or disabled, re-establishing a picture password will no longer be an option. Microsoft emphasizes the importance of maintaining this setup if users wish to continue utilizing it.
In a support document, Microsoft stated, “To help enhance security, picture password is no longer available for new enrollment. Users who have already configured a picture password can continue to use it to sign in to Windows. If a picture password is removed, disabled, or not previously configured, it cannot be set up again. We recommend using Windows Hello PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint recognition where available.”
This decision aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to encourage users to adopt more secure authentication methods, such as PINs, facial recognition, and fingerprint scanning. Although passkeys are frequently highlighted as a leading recommendation for secure access, they are not currently supported for logging into Windows 11 PCs.
