Comma Compliance has taken a significant step towards enhancing trust in enterprise communications archiving by releasing the source code for its Android capture component. This initiative, announced on September 10, 2026, allows corporate IT and security teams to thoroughly inspect the software that captures employee text messages for compliance archiving, now available on GitHub under the MIT license.
Enhancing Transparency in Compliance Archiving
The release of the Comma Compliance Archiver addresses a critical trust issue within the realm of enterprise communications. While Comma’s technology can capture over 40 different communication channels without requiring software installation on employee devices, Android text messaging stands out as the exception. In this case, the capture occurs directly on the device itself.
By making the capture mechanism public, Comma enables security teams to review the specifics of what the application reads, what it omits, and the data transmitted to the customer’s archive. The archiver operates by reading messages already stored in the phone’s default messaging app, encrypting them on the device, and subsequently sending them to the customer’s Comma backend. Importantly, it does not intercept messages in transit, ensuring a secure and compliant process.
Jeremiah Church, CEO of Comma Compliance, emphasized the importance of transparency: “If our software is going to run on a thousand employee phones, the security team responsible for those devices should be able to read the code before it goes onto the first one.” This statement underscores the company’s commitment to fostering trust among its clients.
Moreover, the capture process is designed to be visible to users. When archiving is active, a persistent notification appears on the phone, clearly indicating the organization responsible for the archiving, thus ensuring that users are aware of the process taking place on their devices.
In a previous move towards transparency, Comma open-sourced its WhatsApp and Signal capture connectors in 2025, following a breach that exposed plaintext chat logs on an intermediate archive server. This proactive approach to security and compliance continues to position Comma Compliance as a leader in the RegTech space.
