Traditionally, transferring passwords involved downloading them into an unencrypted text file, which posed a security risk by leaving sensitive information exposed on the device. Google emphasizes that this new method enhances protection, particularly for passkeys—sign-in credentials that replace traditional passwords and reside within the password manager. Previously, transferring these passkeys was not possible, forcing users to manually recreate each one across various sites and applications.
How the transfer works
The process is straightforward. Users begin by opening the new password manager and selecting the option to import or copy data from another provider. Android takes over from there, identifying the password managers currently installed on the device and presenting the available options for transfer. After tapping ‘Continue,’ users are redirected to their previous manager, where they can select, review, and authorize the items they wish to move.
Which apps have it
Currently, four password managers support this streamlined transfer feature: Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. Google has indicated that additional partners will be added in the future, although specific names and timelines have yet to be disclosed. Furthermore, details regarding the Android versions that support this feature remain unspecified, as does the level of protection for credentials during the transfer process, aside from assurances of a secure handoff.
For users whose password managers are not among the four listed, the transition still begins with the export button, ensuring that their passkeys remain safely in place until they are ready to switch.
