Android can now move passwords and passkeys between password managers

In a significant advancement for user convenience, Google has integrated a password manager transfer feature directly into the Android operating system. This new functionality allows users to seamlessly move passwords and passkeys between compatible applications without the cumbersome step of exporting an unencrypted CSV file. Available for devices running Android 8 and later, this feature is also accessible to users in the UAE without any additional local rollout requirements.

Android password manager transfer skips the CSV step

Historically, transferring passwords involved the tedious process of exporting a plain-text CSV file, which posed security risks if left unprotected on devices. The challenge was even greater for passkeys, as they could not be easily transferred between different managers, forcing users to recreate them individually across various platforms.

With Google’s new system, users can initiate the transfer process by selecting the import or copy option in their new password manager app. Android will then identify compatible managers installed on the device. Users simply need to review and authorize the transfer in the original app, with the entire process taking only a few seconds, as reported by TechCrunch.

Which password managers support the transfer?

At launch, this innovative feature supports several popular password managers, including Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane. While Google has indicated that more providers will join this initiative, a specific timeline for additional support has yet to be announced.

This feature operates through Google Play Services, eliminating the need for a separate Android version update. Consequently, any Android device running version 8 or newer, equipped with the appropriate password manager apps, can utilize this functionality. Users in the UAE will benefit from this platform-level feature without any localized pricing adjustments.

The introduction of this transfer capability alleviates the challenges associated with switching password managers, ensuring that users can transition without leaving behind a readable copy of their vaults. Furthermore, it enhances the flexibility of managing passkeys, making them less tied to a single password manager.
