Google Design has unveiled an in-depth look at Noto 3D, marking its expansion beyond the confines of Pixel devices. This innovative design initiative emphasizes a meticulous approach, where every character was hand-drawn and sculpted, ensuring that the essence of each emoji is preserved without sacrificing dimensionality.
Emotional Clarity in Design
At the core of Noto 3D is the principle of “emotional clarity,” steering away from the notion of emoji as mere replicas of the natural world. Google’s design philosophy centers on maintaining the “vibe” of each symbol, blending 3D elements with illustrative techniques to imbue characters with a distinct personality.
“Our job was to preserve the vibe behind each symbol: using 3D to give the character a body, but illustration to give it a soul.”
Research conducted during the design process revealed that intricate anatomical details, such as the depth of irises or nostrils, can hinder emotional processing. Consequently, the design team opted for minimal facial geometry, eliminating unnecessary details that could distract from comprehension. They found that excessive props and textures could create “visual static,” particularly at smaller sizes like 18×18 pixels.
To streamline communication, the team concluded that each emoji should feature no more than three essential details to convey its identity effectively. This led to intriguing questions about the three-dimensional aspects of familiar symbols, such as the back of a smiley face or the curious case of the poodle emoji, which was humorously noted to have only three legs.
Silhouettes and Empathy
Further insights from their research indicated that complete silhouettes foster greater empathy, especially in animal representations. As a result, Google moved away from the traditional floating heads, opting instead to showcase full animal forms. This shift allows for a more authentic portrayal of intent and personality.
“Seeing an animal’s stance, paws, and posture helps communicate intent. Upon learning this last year, we updated a few animal emoji, like the raccoon, to embrace its full mischievous self — and now in 3D.”
With the recent launch of the Pixel 11, Noto 3D is now being rolled out across various Google applications, Android devices, and select partners, including Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, iQOO, HONOR, TECNO, Infinix, itel, and Motorola.
