WhatsApp Plus lets you customise emoji reactions on Android

WhatsApp is rolling out customizable emoji reactions for Plus subscribers on Android devices, allowing users to replace any or all of the six standard emoji reactions with their chosen emojis. This feature is part of the WhatsApp beta 2.26.38.4 update and can be accessed through the Settings menu or directly from chat. While all users can see the Default Reactions tab, only Plus subscribers can utilize the customization feature. Currently, it is available to a select group of beta testers, with no timeline for broader availability.

Google goes in-depth, and a bit NSFW, on Noto 3D emoji as Android rollout expands

Google Design has introduced Noto 3D, expanding its use beyond Pixel devices. Each character in Noto 3D was hand-drawn and sculpted to maintain the essence of emojis while incorporating dimensionality. The design emphasizes "emotional clarity," focusing on preserving the "vibe" of each symbol through a blend of 3D elements and illustrative techniques. Research indicated that intricate details could hinder emotional processing, leading to a design choice of minimal facial geometry and limiting each emoji to three essential details for effective identity conveyance. The team also found that complete silhouettes enhance empathy in animal representations, prompting a shift from floating heads to full animal forms. Noto 3D is being rolled out across various Google applications, Android devices, and select partners, including Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, iQOO, HONOR, TECNO, Infinix, itel, and Motorola.

This keyboard app brings Pixel 11’s best feature to all Android phones

SwiftKey is introducing a new AI-driven voice typing feature in its beta version, inspired by Google's Rambler feature. This tool cleans up and formats speech but does not provide live transcription. The AI model is about 163MB and allows offline functionality on Android devices. Unlike Google's Rambler, which is exclusive to Pixel devices, SwiftKey's feature is available on a wider range of Android smartphones. Testing on a Galaxy Z Fold 8 showed efficient offline processing and transcription. However, it lacks features like tone adjustments, advanced text formatting, and emoji insertion through voice commands. The SwiftKey Beta app can be installed on any Android device and is available for download on the Google Play Store.

Windows 11 Now Supports Emoji 17.0

Microsoft has begun rolling out Emoji 17.0 support for select users via a Windows 11 Release Preview update, which includes 163 new emojis—13 new concepts and 150 skin tone variations. This update is part of a servicing update leading to the upcoming Windows 11 version 26H2. The 2D Fluent emoji set has also been updated, but the 3D Fluent design is now the standard experience across Windows 11. Several emoji designs have been modified for consistency with other platforms, including changes to the Saluting Face, Face with Peeking Eye, and others. The update is available as a complimentary upgrade for select users in specific regions, with a wider rollout expected soon. Nothing OS 5.0 has received the Glyph app – three smartphones will not be getting Android 17

Nothing has unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17, which will begin open testing on August 26 for the Phone (3). Key features include a dynamic home screen theme, the Geist system font, new status bar animations, simultaneous icon and widget movement, Gooey and Micrographics watch faces, a standalone Glyph app, a Glyph Timer widget, an Away Time widget, and a Collector feature for photo curation. Essential AI tools include Essential Voice for cleaner transcriptions, Smart Collections for automatic content grouping, and the creation of Essential Apps. Android 17 enhancements feature improved Quick Share, Noto 3D emojis, an upgraded dark theme, and simplified Bluetooth connectivity. The public rollout of Nothing OS 5.0 for the Phone (3) is scheduled for mid-October, with other models to follow, while Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 will not receive the update. Google released Android 17 in June, introducing universal floating windows and enhanced privacy protections.

Announcing new builds for 17 August 2026

New Windows 11 Insider Preview builds have been released for the Beta and Experimental Channels.
