In a notable shift for its Plus subscribers, WhatsApp is enhancing the user experience by introducing customizable emoji reactions on Android devices. This feature, which has been in the testing phase since the 2.26.29.3 beta version, is now being rolled out to select users who have opted for the paid subscription.
Enhanced Customization Options
With the latest update, WhatsApp beta 2.26.38.4, available on the Google Play Store, subscribers can now personalize their reaction tray. Users have the freedom to replace any or all of the six standard emoji reactions—thumbs up, heart, laughing face, surprised face, sad face, and folded hands—with emojis of their choice. There are no restrictions on the number of slots that can be modified; whether it’s one emoji or all six, the customization is entirely in the hands of the user.
To make these adjustments, users can navigate to Settings, select Chats, and then access the Default Reactions section. Alternatively, for those who prefer a more immediate approach, the emoji keyboard can be opened directly from any chat. By tapping ‘Edit’ on the reactions row, users can seamlessly adjust their emoji selections without leaving the conversation. Changes take effect instantly, enhancing the fluidity of communication.
However, it’s important to note that while all users can see the Default Reactions tab in settings, only Plus subscribers have the ability to utilize this feature. For non-subscribers, this tab serves merely as a preview of what could be available should they choose to upgrade.
WhatsApp Plus has long been known for its array of customization features, which include custom themes, personalized app icons, premium stickers, and the ability to pin up to 20 chats. The introduction of custom reactions adds another layer to this suite of options, allowing users to express themselves more freely.
Currently, access to this feature is limited to a select group of beta testers, and WhatsApp has not provided a timeline for when it will be available to the broader user base.
