Microsoft is adding a new customizable Start menu to Windows 11: Here’s a first look

Microsoft has introduced customization enhancements for the Start menu in Windows 11, available in preview through the Windows 11 Insider Program. Users can now fully configure which segments of the Start menu are displayed, allowing them to toggle off individual segments: Pinned, Recommended, and All apps. Accessing these options can be done via the Windows Settings app or by right-clicking an empty space in the Start menu. The Recommended feed now allows users to specify the types of items displayed, such as excluding recommended apps while still viewing recent files and installed applications. Users can also adjust the size of the Start menu between small and large, and they have the option to hide their account name and profile picture. However, users cannot rearrange the order of the segments, which remains fixed.

Microsoft wants AI to customize your Windows 11 entirely with one sentence, shows off a demo

At Build 2026, Microsoft announced plans to enhance Windows 11 personalization through AI agents, with API endpoints available for developers to create tailored experiences. Product Manager Samantha Song highlighted the need for a more user-friendly interface that reflects individual preferences, noting current customization options can be cumbersome. Microsoft introduced "WinUI skills," enabling developers to use AI agents like Copilot to create native applications that interact with Windows APIs. Users could instruct AI to modify themes, such as creating a cherry blossom theme, which would adjust wallpapers and accent colors automatically. AI skills could also apply accent colors to File Explorer and download themed wallpapers. The theme module can orchestrate multiple actions, allowing users to change their entire Windows theme with a single command. Microsoft is exploring a themes agent for generating new themes. While currently an open-source project, there is potential for these features to be integrated into Windows 11, enhancing user experience through personalized customization.

Microsoft Brings Back Windows 10-Style Taskbar and Start Menu Customization in Windows 11

Microsoft is set to introduce comprehensive support for Taskbar and Start Menu customization in Windows 11, rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel over the next few weeks. Users will be able to reposition the Taskbar to any side of the screen and adjust icon alignment with options for top-aligned, center-aligned, left-aligned, and right-aligned. Access to these settings will be through Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. A new feature will also allow for smaller icons and a more discreet Taskbar presence. Additionally, a redesigned Start Menu customization initiative will allow users to select between smaller and larger Start sizes, independently hide or show sections like Pinned, Recent, and All, and remove their name and profile photo for privacy. The Start Menu's file recommendations will be decoupled from File Explorer's recent items and jump lists, meaning disabling recommendations will not affect recent activity elsewhere in Windows. The recommendation area will be rebranded as "Recent," ensuring visibility for newly installed applications while refining the selection of displayed files. These updates are expected to be available to regular Windows 11 users on versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 within approximately a month.
