Microsoft has reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing the user experience in Windows 11 by redesigning every legacy dialog box within the operating system. This initiative comes in response to user feedback highlighting discrepancies between certain settings and the overall aesthetic of Windows 11, as reported by Windows Latest.
Design Refresh Plans
March Rogers, Microsoft’s design director, has taken the lead on this project, emphasizing the importance of consistency across the platform. Users pointed out specific examples, such as the Speech settings dialog, which displays an outdated interface lacking the sleek, rounded corners characteristic of Windows 11. Another notable mention is the Windows recovery menu, which has not seen a visual update since the days of Windows 8.1.
To address these concerns, Microsoft is employing two distinct strategies for updating these legacy elements:
- Incremental Updates: The first approach is a more cautious and gradual method, introducing a dark theme across all system dialogs to enhance visual coherence.
- Comprehensive Redesign: The second strategy involves a complete overhaul using the modern WinUI 3 interface framework, allowing for a fresh and contemporary look.
Microsoft acknowledges that not every dialog box can transition smoothly to the new design language. Even minor adjustments to certain interface components carry the risk of introducing issues. A prime example of this dual approach is the Run menu, which has been completely revamped using C# and WinUI 3. This new version boasts a dark theme, an updated history list, the ability to open the home directory with a simple “~”, and improved startup times.
In a user-centric move, Microsoft has retained the previous version of the Run menu, allowing users the flexibility to choose the interface that best suits their preferences. Currently, these updates are available in test builds of Windows 11, signaling a proactive step towards enhancing user satisfaction.
In related news, Microsoft is also rolling out additional security patches, bolstered by AI-powered vulnerability detection, and has released an emergency patch to address issues stemming from the September update.
