What you need to know
- Gemini Gems are being phased out as Google replaces them with more flexible, reusable Skills.
- Skills roll out October 5 in Workspace and October 13 in the Gemini app, with Gems starting their exit in November.
- Multiple Skills can work together, letting Gemini combine specialized instructions for more complex tasks.
In a significant shift, Google is transitioning from its customizable Gems to a more versatile framework known as Skills. This change is set to unfold with a clear timeline: Skills will begin their rollout in Google Workspace on October 5, followed by the Gemini app on October 13. The phased departure of Gems will commence in November.
For those unfamiliar, Gems were tailored versions of Gemini designed to execute specific instructions. Skills elevate this concept by transforming those instructions into reusable, modular components. This means that companies can encapsulate their brand voice, templates, processes, and other essential materials within a Skill, allowing for efficient reuse in similar tasks.
The most notable enhancement is the ability to stack Skills. Instead of relying on a single custom assistant, users can now have one Skill dedicated to crafting a weekly newsletter and another focused on ensuring compliance with brand guidelines. Furthermore, Gemini will intelligently recognize when a Skill is relevant to a prompt, eliminating the need for manual selection each time.
Built on open standards
Skills will also be accessible to non-work accounts on Google. As the Gemini app rollout commences, both personal Google account users and Google Workspace customers will benefit from this new feature. Skills are built on an open SKILL.md format utilizing Markdown, which Google asserts enhances their portability across compatible platforms.
However, there is a caveat: Skills created in Gemini and Workspace will not automatically synchronize between the two environments. Users wishing to access the same Skill in both locations will need to create it separately in each platform.
The transition will occur in phases, with Gems being transferred to Gemini’s Settings on November 17, where they will remain usable for a limited time. Business and enterprise accounts will retain their Gems until March 1, 2027, while educational accounts will have until June 1. Eventually, any remaining Gems will be converted into draft Skills.
