Pixel Search could soon get a Gemini-powered upgrade along with privacy improvements

The latest update to the Pixel Search app, now at version 1.0.983036833, introduces a significant enhancement with the addition of a “Privacy & Permissions” section in its settings. This new feature empowers users by allowing them to manage how their data is utilized within the app.

Enhanced User Control

Within the “Privacy & Permissions” section, users will find three toggles: “Help improve Pixel Search,” “Call Logs,” and “SMS.” This setup gives individuals the option to decide whether they want the app to utilize their call logs and SMS history for refining contact suggestions.

For those who prefer to keep their data private, the “Help improve Pixel Search” toggle can be disabled to prevent data aggregation for usage insights. Similarly, users can opt out of using their call and SMS history for contact suggestions by turning off the respective toggles. However, it’s important to note that disabling these options does not stop Pixel Search from displaying results from call history or messages. To completely remove call logs or messages from search results, users must revoke the “Call logs” and “SMS” permissions in the app’s “App Permissions” page.

Future Features on the Horizon

In addition to the privacy enhancements, an intriguing discovery has been made within the app’s code regarding a potential new feature called “Gemini-powered suggestions.” This feature aims to proactively present relevant information and actions to assist users in completing tasks more efficiently. Strings found in the code suggest that this feature will enhance the overall user experience by surfacing pertinent information tailored to individual needs.

While Gemini-powered suggestions are not yet available, the groundwork has been laid for future updates. Users can currently enjoy the benefits of the new “Privacy & Permissions” section, which is already accessible in the latest version of Pixel Search.

For those eager to explore these updates, the Pixel Search app can be updated via the Play Store on the Pixel 11 series. Users with older Pixel devices can sideload the app, provided their device is running Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 or newer.

⚠️ It’s worth noting that an APK teardown can provide insights into potential future features based on preliminary code. However, there is no guarantee that these features will be included in a public release.
