Google could soon let Gemini handle your Gmail inbox for you

Google is enhancing its AI Inbox feature in Gmail, aiming to provide users with an even more streamlined email management experience. The introduction of agentic Gemini tasks is set to elevate the functionality of AI Inbox, allowing users to delegate specific tasks for Gemini to handle.

Enhanced Task Management with Gemini

Since its inception, AI Inbox has been a valuable tool for those struggling to maintain a tidy inbox. It effectively highlights important emails and action items, simplifying the often overwhelming task of email management. The latest updates indicate that Google is keen on expanding this utility.

Insights from a recent post by Abhishek Yadav on X reveal that Google is integrating support for agentic Gemini tasks into Gmail. A thorough examination of the latest Gmail app version (v2026.09.28) has uncovered several strings that outline the potential workings of this feature.

Once implemented, users will notice a “Start with Gemini” button adjacent to suggested action items. Engaging this button will activate Gemini, which will then display an “In progress” status, indicating that it is actively working on the task at hand. For tasks requiring a response, a “Draft Reply” option will also be available.

While Gemini operates autonomously, it is designed to seek human input when necessary. For tasks that require clarification or confirmation, users will see a “Needs your input” status. A corresponding “Give input” button will enable users to provide the necessary details for Gemini to complete the task effectively.

Furthermore, once Gemini has completed a task, users will encounter a “Ready for Review” status. This feature allows users to assess what has been accomplished by Gemini and either approve or reject any modifications made by the AI.

The strings extracted from the Gmail app’s code provide a glimpse into the user experience:

AI Inbox stands out as one of the most beneficial AI features within Gmail, effectively alleviating the burden of email overload. With the anticipated rollout of agentic Gemini tasks, users may find it even easier to manage their inboxes and stay organized.

⚠️ It is important to note that an APK teardown can forecast potential features based on ongoing code development, but there is no guarantee that these features will be included in future public releases.
