Microsoft has unveiled an ad-free update for Skype, currently rolling out to participants in the company’s Insider program. This move, while celebrated by some, may not fully satisfy users who are still lamenting the absence of features that once defined the platform’s appeal.
Skype’s Latest Update
In the announcement for Skype version 8.125.76.201, Microsoft expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’re excited to announce that Skype is now ad-free! Our latest update removes all ads from Skype channels and the entire Skype platform, ensuring a smoother, decluttered, and more enjoyable user experience.”
However, this decision raises eyebrows, particularly as Microsoft continues to weave advertisements into various facets of the Windows ecosystem. The update, first highlighted by Windows Latest, does not reinstate features that users have been clamoring for, such as the much-missed “Split View” option. Instead, it introduces more AI-driven functionalities, including a “revamped AI image creation experience.” Users can now access this feature directly from the chat window or top bar, allowing them to generate images by simply typing in their requests and adjusting settings.
While Microsoft appears to be doubling down on AI integration, the Skype team’s assertion that they have “prioritized your feedback to create a more streamlined and pleasant environment across all platforms” may not resonate with users who feel their concerns are being overlooked.
One user, reluctant to upgrade from the version that still supports Split View, shared their frustration: “I’m on version 8.96.0.409 with split view and I got a notification today in Skype: ‘Immediate Action Required! To enhance your security and Skype experience, we will be retiring this Skype version, and you will be required to update it by September 15, 2024.’ It’s been over a year without the feature in newer versions, and that’s the most voted topic on the Skype Feedback Hub. Will Split View come back before September 15, 2024?”
For those who remember, Split View was a valuable feature that allowed users to keep their contact list in one window while managing conversations in separate ones. Although it was reinstated in 2019 after being removed during a previous modernization effort, it faced another elimination in 2023 due to reported performance issues and crashes.
As of now, Microsoft has not addressed the growing concerns surrounding the absence of Split View. It seems that, for the time being, there is no AI solution for this particular user demand.
