Kaspersky Anti-Virus presents a user-friendly interface that is both clean and straightforward, designed primarily for its core function of virus detection. The software is organized into four main sections: scan, database update, reports, and an on-screen keyboard, along with links to settings and additional tools. Let’s explore each of these components, starting from the simplest to the more intricate features.
On-Screen Keyboard
The on-screen keyboard might initially appear to be a minor feature, perhaps even superfluous. However, for those acquainted with the keylogger hacking technique, this addition is quite valuable. Keyloggers are malicious programs that capture keystrokes, enabling hackers to pilfer personal information and passwords without detection.
While Kaspersky’s robust malware detection capabilities reassure us that it would identify any lurking keyloggers, we prefer to utilize the on-screen keyboard when entering sensitive data such as passwords. Although it may be less convenient than a traditional keyboard, this virtual alternative enhances privacy, provided there are no prying eyes nearby.
Reports
The Reports section provides a comprehensive overview of the software’s scanning activities, detailing file scans, web traffic, and network threats. It also showcases data from Kaspersky’s advanced feature, System Watcher. Although we were fortunate not to encounter a malware attack during our evaluation, System Watcher offers the capability to mitigate the effects of such attacks, including the ability to reverse remote file locks.
Database Update
In the Database Update section, we found the process to be equally straightforward. This feature ensures that the software remains current with the latest threat information and is set to update automatically at regular intervals. Users can opt to schedule updates at specific times, but we chose to stick with the recommended automatic updates. Manual updates are also an option for those who prefer them.
Scans
The scan menu boasts a variety of features, with the Quick Scan being the most prominent. We initiated this scan immediately, and it completed in just seven minutes, targeting the areas of our computer most vulnerable to viruses and malware. Should any issues arise, the software is programmed to conduct a full scan of the entire system.
Our initial quick scan yielded no findings, prompting us to proceed with a full scan. The software cautioned us that this process might take some time and could slow down our computer. Indeed, we found ourselves unable to use the device during the scan, which ultimately ran overnight. The final report indicated that the scan took over four hours, yet it still found nothing. While this may seem unremarkable, it is worth noting that Kaspersky successfully detected all actual malware during our testing.
Pro Tip: Starting full scans at night minimizes disruption from a slowed-down computer.
Additional scanning options include selective scans for specific folders and files, as well as removable drive scans for USB devices. We recommend establishing a routine of daily quick scans and monthly full scans to ensure malware is kept at bay without interrupting normal desktop activities.
Despite the ease of adjusting settings, we were surprised to discover that the default configuration did not include automatic scans, even though Kaspersky advises against manual scans. However, we did notice that the “Background scan” mode, which monitors system memory, was enabled by default. Other settings, such as the deletion of malicious tools and automatic launch at startup, were also pre-configured.
Overall, Kaspersky Anti-Virus offers a high degree of customization. We particularly appreciated the “Gamer Mode,” which automatically defers scheduled scans when a full-screen application, like a game, is running. As enthusiastic gamers, we value uninterrupted gameplay and can confirm that our testing period was free from interruptions.
Pro Tip: Click the gear icon at the bottom of the app or the icons next to each of the scan options to customize the scan schedule.
Moreover, the software intelligently postpones tasks when the computer operates on battery power or when disk activity is high, minimizing slowdowns. We also valued the option to easily opt out of promotional offers and advertisements within the app. In summary, Kaspersky Anti-Virus delivers a straightforward and customizable experience, complemented by an intuitive design that enhances user navigation.
