Kaspersky Banned from Selling Antivirus Products in the US
President Joe Biden’s administration has taken a bold step by banning Russia-based cybersecurity firm Kaspersky from providing its antivirus products in the United States. The US Commerce Department cited “national security” concerns as the reason behind this decision, indicating that Kaspersky will no longer be able to sell its software or provide updates within the country.
The Department’s statement highlighted that the ban was a result of a thorough investigation that revealed the national security risks posed by Kaspersky’s operations due to the Russian Government’s cyber capabilities. US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasized that Russia has a history of exploiting companies like Kaspersky to collect sensitive US information.
In response, Kaspersky expressed its disappointment, stating that the decision was influenced by the current geopolitical climate and theoretical concerns. The company vowed to explore all legal options to maintain its operations and relationships, asserting that it does not engage in activities that threaten US national security.
This move marks the first action taken under an executive order issued during former President Donald Trump’s administration, empowering the Commerce Department to investigate companies for national security risks. Raimondo reiterated that the US will not hesitate to act against technologies that pose a risk to the country and its citizens.
While Kaspersky operates in 31 countries and serves millions of users worldwide, the Commerce Department also added three related entities to its list of national security concerns for their cooperation with Russian military and intelligence authorities. Users are encouraged to switch to alternative vendors, although they are not prohibited from using Kaspersky’s software if they choose.
Until September 29 this year, Kaspersky is allowed to provide antivirus updates and continue certain operations in the US to minimize disruption for consumers and businesses, giving them time to find suitable alternatives.
