13 years on, unfinishable survival game Project Zomboid is getting a major update with an expanded Kentucky map, animal husbandry, and revised crafting

Project Zomboid’s Anticipated Build 42 Update

After a prolonged hiatus, I find myself drawn back to Project Zomboid, much like a weary survivor returning to a desolate town long abandoned, having depleted their supplies of cabbage and duct tape. As I cautiously explore the Steam forums, it feels akin to peeking into a quiet, eerie mall.

It has been six years since we last reported on this iconic isometric survival game, which continues to hold a cherished spot on our list of the best PC survival experiences. The timing for a revisit is fortuitous, as The Indie Stone prepares to unveil a substantial new version, Build 42, heralded as “one of the broadest updates in Project Zomboid’s long development history.” For context, the game has been in early access since 2013, evolving steadily over the years.

Set to launch on July 29th, the Build 42 update has been two years in the making, alongside several smaller beta updates. This release introduces a host of new features, including the much-anticipated animal husbandry, an overhaul of crafting and building systems, newly designed areas, enriched backstories, an enhanced lighting system, and a refined user interface. Indeed, Project Zomboid appears revitalized, despite its ongoing narrative of decay.

Christian Allen, design director at The Indie Stone, expressed gratitude towards the community: “Build 42 has been a huge undertaking for the team, and we are all incredibly grateful to the community for sticking with us: testing, surviving, dying, and then doing it all again, while providing valuable feedback all along the way.”

Of particular interest are the new crafting and building elements, which promise to range from simple fixes to ambitious self-sufficiency projects. More details are expected to surface as the update approaches. However, players should note that existing saves from Build 41 will not be compatible with Build 42. Those wishing to continue their adventures in Build 41 will need to enroll in the special beta channel “legacy41.”

For newcomers to Project Zomboid, a brief introduction penned by Hayden in 2022 offers insights into the game’s unique take on survival, challenging many preconceived notions shaped by popular media like The Walking Dead.
