In a landscape marked by uncertainty and upheaval within the gaming industry, Saber Interactive stands out as a beacon of success. Once primarily recognized for its vehicle simulators and action titles like World War Z, the studio has recently experienced a remarkable transformation, largely attributed to the success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. This title has not only elevated Saber’s profile but has also opened doors to new opportunities in the gaming world.
Transformative Success
Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber, reflects on the profound impact that Space Marine 2 has had on the studio’s trajectory. He notes that the game “literally changed everything” for Saber, reshaping both internal perspectives on game development and external perceptions of the studio. “It not only changed the way that the team looks at making games, it changed how people look at us,” he elaborates, highlighting the shift in confidence and ambition that has followed the game’s success.
Willits emphasizes that a major hit can significantly influence a studio’s approach to future projects. “When you have a huge hit, when you go to make the next game, everything has to be awesome,” he states. This newfound drive fuels the team’s creativity and ambition, pushing them to strive for excellence in every aspect of game development.
New Opportunities on the Horizon
The success of Space Marine 2 has not only bolstered Saber’s confidence but has also attracted the attention of potential collaborators. Willits reveals that numerous major license holders have reached out to Saber, eager to explore partnership opportunities. “We are in a very fortunate position to turn down more than we can accept,” he shares, indicating the studio’s newfound leverage in the industry. “You know you’re successful when you’ve turned down those guys.”
Willits cites examples such as Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, illustrating how established franchises can provide a safer bet for game development. “If we wanted to make a survival horror game and it was our own IP, it would be more of an uphill battle. But people have heard of Hellraiser. People have heard of Space Marine, and Space Marine 2 was a huge success,” he explains. This recognition not only enhances the appeal of their projects but also solidifies Saber’s position as a formidable player in the gaming industry.
