Nivalis Nights might not have any combat, “but that doesn’t mean it’s a cosy game,” so says its lead writer

The game Nivalis Nights is designed to be intentionally overwhelming at the start, reflecting the stress of a cyberpunk world without traditional elements like player death or boss fights. Players navigate a chaotic environment where every app demands attention, mirroring modern life's pace. The game allows for various paths to success, including unconventional achievements, and emphasizes the complexity of relationships through its dating mechanics, aiming for authenticity and unpredictability. The game's narrative explores themes of technological advancement and societal pressures, inviting players to actively engage rather than passively receive rewards.

The advent of first-person shooters introduced a wild frontier of unregulated video game level packs, and it ended in a lawsuit that changed copyright forever

In the 1990s, level packs emerged as a unique category of content for early first-person shooters like Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, sold as boxed products. Notable level packs included Duke Caribbean: Life's A Beach and Duke It Out in DC, which were well-received. Designer Wiederhold, recruited by Sunstorm Interactive after a LAN tournament, contributed to these packs alongside Robert Travis. The period was characterized by a lack of industry structure, allowing for creative exploration. However, some level packs, like Duke Assault, suffered from poor curation. The Nuke It series led to a legal battle over copyright infringement, with a 1998 court ruling favoring FormGen, establishing that video game mods are derivative works. This ruling curtailed unregulated FPS mission packs and clarified the distinction between official expansions and unofficial mods. Despite this, the mapping scene for iconic shooters continues to thrive today.

A week with Googlebooks: four notes from our testing so far

Google has launched five new Googlebook laptops featuring the Googlebook OS, which has received mixed reviews. While the hardware is praised, the software is criticized for being problematic and not a significant upgrade from ChromeOS. Users report issues such as the inability to run Chrome with separate Google accounts, clunky Android apps, and awkward command requirements for messaging apps. The app ecosystem is struggling, with many applications failing to adapt to the Googlebook's interface, resulting in a frustrating user experience. Linux applications face integration challenges, complicating multitasking. Despite some successful features like file transfer and notification responses between Googlebook and Android devices, users experience frequent connectivity issues and sluggish performance.

‘I was nice to you three times in a row, so can I have one sex please?’: Why Nivalis Nights intentionally avoided transactional romances

Nivalis Nights combines storytelling and shop simulation with relationship dynamics, allowing players to interact with characters in ways that shape four attitudes: friendly, combative, romantic, and savvy. The dialogue options do not provide clear indicators, leading to ambiguous interactions that can result in unintended outcomes, such as offending a character or flirting unintentionally. Some characters hint at potential romantic paths, while others are less clear about their intentions. Lead writer Thomas Welsh notes that this design choice intentionally diverges from traditional romance systems in games, which often use clear markers to guide players. The lack of tone markers in dialogue requires players to interpret their interactions, resulting in varied experiences where relationships may develop unexpectedly or remain platonic.

‘Overcooked broke you apart and Stage Fright is there to put you back together’

Ghost Town Games is releasing Stage Fright, a co-op adventure focused on collaboration. The game features two players guiding children through a whimsical world, solving puzzles and dodging threats. It uses a simple single-button mechanic and emphasizes verbal communication without traditional inventory management. The gameplay is likened to an escape room experience, with clues that may not be immediately relevant. The developers describe it as a family-friendly version of Silent Hill, blending lightheartedness with mystery.

Wardogs will bribe players with cash and XP to pick Blue team in Season 2

- Lonestar cash and XP bonuses are introduced for Season 2, along with a new Bakurani spawn. - Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer stated they are looking to improve the win rate of the Blue team. - Players have historically avoided the Blue team due to balancing issues, such as poor camouflage and spawn points. - The stigma surrounding the Blue team may be self-perpetuating, as players who struggle with it tend to avoid it, leading to a cycle of less experienced players choosing Blue. - The introduction of XP and cash incentives aims to change the dynamics of team selection, with expectations that Blue will become more popular in Season 2. - Recent observations indicate that the Blue team is becoming more competitive, scoring points and achieving victories on NA West servers. - The October 15 patch for Wardogs will introduce new firearms, vehicles, rainy weather across all maps, and will reset player progress, marking the first progression wipe.

Microsoft confirms a Windows update can close games that use AC-3 audio

Microsoft has acknowledged an issue related to a Windows update (KB5124010) released on September 22, 2026, which has caused unexpected closures of various games that rely on AC-3 audio decoding. This issue affects Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2, while server editions remain unaffected. The problem primarily impacts legacy applications that depend on Windows' built-in audio decoding, particularly older PC games using the Dolby Digital codec for pre-rendered cutscenes and licensed soundtracks. Microsoft has confirmed the issue but has not provided a list of affected titles, workarounds, or a resolution timeline. The status remains unchanged as of October 7, and the issue persists regardless of user action.

Exclusive: Frosthaven digital reveals the PC board game’s frosty final character

Frosthaven Digital will release its full 1.0 version on October 15. The game has been enhanced with new features, classes, and missions to align closely with the original board game. Team Wargamer awarded it a 10/10 rating. The digital format allows players to complete scenarios in about 30 to 40 minutes, compared to two to three scenarios in five hours for the physical version. A "custom save" feature will enable players to edit saves and import campaigns from physical to digital formats. The 1.0 version is 99% mechanically accurate to the board game, with some minor visual adjustments. Players can unlock a new hero, the Shattersong, late in the game, which plays a supportive role. There are 137 missions in total, with 64 as the main story and many side quests available. The onboarding process will include a three-mission tutorial and a four-mission prequel.

I am cavorting with a gazelle’s grace in Grand Theft Auto 5

A modder is experimenting with Grand Theft Auto 5, aiming to enhance it towards a PC version of GTA 6 or to deconstruct it. One notable creation is the Back Flip Mod, which allows characters to perform backflips using the page down key. While successful flips lead to amusing self-satisfaction, there is a risk of failure, resulting in a ragdoll effect when characters attempt the maneuver. This unpredictability adds humor to the modding experience and keeps the community engaged.
